As a skill this is critical and very important if a coach wants to achieve success throughout coaching as planning and being organised can keep athletes engaged and the coach motivated (Mac, 2013). If a coach has poor organisation skills, they may lose motivation or lose interest to achieve their goal for the session (Rogers 2000). Being organised can glue the coach and the athletes together and can also reduce anxiety in sessions or in game time Mcquade (2005). It has been stated in the article of Dawson (2019)that a good coach needs to be organised as this can reduce stress levels which will allow a coach to carry out successful sessions.
In my experience at BCFA I believe I have developed this skill by always planning out my sessions, being proactive and making a list of what equipment is available for the day and for future sessions. Since my last post on developing organisation skills I would not say I have become great at organising as I have come across some sessions where similar situations occurred. For example, equipment was booked out and was conducted in another session which I had no idea of which resulted in me not being able to access this equipment for my session. This resulted in a complete change of session and a coach had to also step in to guide me through the session as I did not have a plan B. As a coach I should have foreseen this and experiencing situations like this helped me develop this skill as I have not experienced an organisation problem like this since this occurred in my training session. I started to prevent this by always booking out equipment for the upcoming week before I finished for the day and noting down what equipment is available and what equipment is booked by looking at the document that is used by all coaches to book out equipment. This led to me planning sessions accordingly depending on what equipment is available for me to use in sessions.
Therefore, I believe I have developed this skill over the past couple of months coaching at BCFA as I do believe with experience I become better at organising my sessions and overcoming obstacles in sessions motivates me to become better at coaching.
This allows me to carry out my sessions effectively and give the athletes the opportunities they need to progress each session.
